Clifford Chance has elected London partner David Childs its next global managing partner.
Childs will take over the firm's top management job on May 1 and is set to serve a four-year term.
Childs, 54, said in a statement Friday that he was "delighted and honored" to become the head of Clifford Chance. "We are one of the leading law firms in the world," he said, "and I plan to build on the considerable progress."
Childs had been widely expected to succeed present global head Peter Cornell, who announced earlier in the year he would not seek re-election.
One of the largest firms in the world and a member of London's Magic Circle of leading corporate firms, Clifford Chance has experienced difficulty in its U.S. expansion efforts. The firm acquired New York's Rogers & Wells in 2000 but saw a large number of U.S. partner departures in the years following the combination.
Cornell had re-located to New York from London at the beginning of last year to help boost the firm's U.S. operations.
