Departing from the tradition of hiring second-year students for summer positions, firms are now wooing first-years. One risk: First-years are less likely to return after graduation than second-year students. Nevertheless, firms see 1Ls as a marketing opportunity. "If they hire a 1L, they're often hiring a cheerleader," said Gihan Fernando, assistant dean for career services at Georgetown. But can 1Ls keep up? "It was challenging to work on projects that I hadn't studied yet," said a former 1L summer.
